Dear Editor, I could not help but write in your letters column to thank Azfar Hussain for his most befitting tribute to a great leader. In every line of his writing, Hussain described the qualities a leader must possess and that Moulana Bhashani possessed. We miss Bhashani at this political juncture of our lives. Bhashani was a selfless leader who led our nation through a perilous journey much before 1971, and continued to provide leadership through the last days of his life. He is the true father who cared for more than 70 million of his children unto his death. I hope a nation, if grateful, will give Bhashani his deserved position in history. Bangladesh needs a leader like Bhashani to lead the country through this ongoing man-made crisis which is neither justified nor due. I thank Hussain once again for reminding our nation of the qualities of leadership Bhashani possessed. We need a leader like Bhashani at this time of crisis. Unfortunately, we do not have one when we need it most. Nurul Huq Dear Editor, I wish to congratulate Dr. Azfar Hussain for presenting the nation with such a brilliant resume on Maulana Bhashani, a forgotten icon of voice against oppression, injustice and corruption. The whole piece is not only historically insightful, but also analytically inspiring! Lucidly written and boldly told, Hussain has reminded us how the Maulana made politics a business for the people and not off the people. The article is a timely reminder that right now the nation needs another Maulana to bring back dignity and integrity to the idea of politics, a practice that has become totally self-seeking and guttural. Adil Khan Dear Editor, Very interesting cover. Men like Bhashani, Surwardy, Sher-e-Bangla and Osmani are people we have grown hearing of and seeing images on stamps and books, but rarely have we read in detail about their lives and contributions. Maybe, history and historical figures of a country call for a separate section of Slate. Abdul Ghani Dear Editor, ‘Visions of new Dhaka’ was a good story, badly titled. There is no vision. Mahfuz Sadique addressed most issues that have been talked about in recent years with the warning signs coming through one small disaster after the other, with little or no effect on the authorities. This is one thing we turn a blind eye to after a few days have passed, after an incident. When something major like an earthquake happens, we might be left with a lot of soul-searching, to no avail. Sultan Mahmud Dear Editor, The two-story building in which I live used to have a view. I could also see the sunset from the roof, and the small patch of grass in the yard used to get sunlight. In the space of three years, three adjacent buildings have gone up to six storeys, and two more are about to start; and all this in a dead end alley which in places is only wide enough for one car. As much as I agree with Mahfuz Sadique’s article, I think it will take more than just new guidelines on paper to make any significant difference. H Azad
