Dear Editor,
The alphabetical index of the ‘state of emergency’ reminded me of the 100 things that Slate brought out in its first issue this year. Amazing ideas, I must say, because each of them capture the pulse of the people. Beginning from the temporary sigh of relief to Fakhruddin’s government to Yunus’ Nagarik Shakti, the demolitions, the political culprits and the new rules were all expressed within the 26 letters. Easy to read!

   Dear Editor,
Himu should be cast in teleplays. I am sure there is a huge audience for that. I enjoyed knowing that so many people are self-proclaimed Himu’s, so much so, that Himu has international recognition. The German Himu and female Himu made me laugh to tears. In any case, it is Humayun Ahmed himself who comes out in those novels, as is mentioned in one part of the story. Indeed, it is a do-as-you-like, wish-fulfilling, character. Not going to the depth of the writer I would appreciate him for giving justice to Himu and his character. Himu Bhai, you rock!

   Dear Editor,
I used to be a fan of Bangladeshi movies when Razzak, Babita and Shabana portrayed the main roles around the seventies and early eighties. But as time passed, the Bangladesh film industry, more specifically, the Film Development Corporation (FDC) seemed inclined at racing up to Hollywood and Bollywood standards. Not through better stories, cinematography and acting, rather through a graphic portrayal of sex and violence. The thought boggles my mind about what messages these movies are dissipating into the minds of their audiences.
The brilliant piece on Dhalliwood by Tahmina Shafique and Adnan Khandaker, provided me valuable insight. Thanks a lot for their efforts. I would like more such stories from these writers.

   Dear Editor,
I read Mahfuz Sadique’s article about Himu on the latest issue of Slate and it had me wondering about the adverse influence being indirectly stated through it.
When a reader picks up a novel, he or she is perfectly aware of the kind of entertainment he would be getting from it. They are reading it because they want to hide from reality and be in a reality painted by the author.
Humayun Ahmed’s Himu titles were in no way different from these. I have read almost all the titles and I never had any depressions or other mental illnesses that can land me in a psychiatric ward. Definitely, these problems can occur due to individual issues and I do not think the author or the titles should be blamed for these.
Nevertheless, I would like to thank Mahfuz Sadique for his wonderful piece.
   Rafi Ahmed
