Former minister Majid-ul-Haq dies

Former cabinet minister M Majid-ul-Haq died of lung infection at Apollo Hospital in the city on Monday morning. He was 87.
Majid, also a retired major general of the army, born in Magura in 1926 and grew up in Delhi, graduated from the Bengal College of Engineering in Shibpur and joined the Royal Indian Military Academy in 1947.
In 1947, he was transferred to Pakistan and commissioned as a regular officer in the Pakistan Army and subsequently joined the corps of engineers.
He attended the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in USA. He was then posted to the Pakistan Navy in Karachi and thereafter to Gilgit to work on the Karakoram mountain highway project.
After the declaration of martial law in 1969, he was posted as deputy martial law administrator in the then East Pakistan but transferred before the general elections in 1970.
In Bangladesh, he served in various capacities including chairman of Bangladesh Steel Corporation, \special secretary with the rank and status of state minister, minister for industries, establishment, water resources, port and shipping, jute and textiles, and agriculture, under different governments.
He was also a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party standing committee until he resigned in 1998.
Majid-ul-Haq’s memoir, ‘Unknown, Unhonoured and Unsung’ (Writers Ink, 2012), illuminates his skill as a story teller and describes the political and social reality of the time in a humorous and personal way.
He has completed Volume 2 of his memoir and it will be published soon, said a release.
His beloved wife Mumtaz Jahan Zeb-Un-Nisa Majid passed away less than 10 days ago.
A prayer session will be held on Friday after Asr prayers at Banani DOHS community centre in the city and all the family members, friends and well wishers have been requested to join the session.
