Minister’s direction to ease tailback falls on deaf ears

Staff Correspondent

Communications minister Obaidul Kader’s direction to make straight the traffic on the road stretch from Shahbagh to Sonargaon Hotel for reducing traffic congestions is yet to be implemented.
The minister on August 6 this year, while visiting Shahbagh-Karwan Bazar-Farmgate areas to observe the traffic situation,
said the city’s traffic congestion would become tolerable within the next six months.
The joint commissioner of police (traffic) Mahbubur Rahman said the traffic on the road from Banglamotor to Sonargaon Hotel should be made straight to reduce traffic congestions.
Obaidul Kader agreed to the proposal and told reporters that after Eid-ul-Fitr, for seven days, the authorities would make the traffic on the road span straight to see the results.
‘During Eid we do not want any experiments, but after Eid we will try a new programme to solve the situation,’ he added.
While talking to New Age, Mahbubur Rahman recently confirmed that they were yet to implement the initiative.
‘This decision could not be implemented all on a sudden,’ he said.
The joint commissioner also said they were talking with representatives of different authorities on the initiative.
Thousands of city people continue to suffer for huge traffic congestion and an acute lack of public transport.
The problem is particularly bad at Farmagate, Shahbagh, Moghbazar, Bijoy Sarani, Gulishtan, Malibagh, Rampura, Kamlapur, Saidabad, Jatrabari and Dhanmondi.
