The 3rd death anniversary of legendary baul Shah Abdul Karim was observed through presentation of his popular songs on Wednesday at an open air concert at the Soparjita Swadhinata on Dhaka University campus.
The artistes of Udichi Shilpagosthi’s Dhaka University unit rendered the legend’s timeless songs in chorus and solos at the programme titled Mayajaale Bondi Hoiya ar Katokaal Thakibo.
The programme began with a chorus rendition of Basanta batashey, which brought the flavour of the spring amongst the huge crowd, who attended the programme in the cloudy evening of the late monsoon season.
The chorus also presented two more Karim’s songs- Jigges kori tomar kanchhey and Gram-er naojowan hindu mosulman- highlighting the spirit of humanism and the mystic baul’s bold stand against sectarianism, which is previewing in the society.
Anamil just moved the audience through her solo presentation of popular song Bonde maya lagaise. Shah Abdul Karim’s two more songs titled Shona bandhu bhuilo na and Kemone bhulibo ami, rendered by Tinni and Trina respectively, entertained the audience with the power of mysticism and melody.  Shuvo gave a spontaneous presentation while rendering another popular song Gaan gai amar mon re bujhai. One of the most popular mystic song composed by Shah Abdul Karim Gaari cholena cholena, presented by Jhumu at the programme, also moved the audience.
Earlier, Professor Shafiuddin Ahmed, Professor Kaberi Gayen, secretary of the Udichi Iqbal Haque Khan, assistant general secretary of the Udichi Prabir Sardar, and others spoke at the programme.
The speakers at the programme highlighted Shah Abdul Karim as a poet of humanity and his firm stands against all sorts of discrimination, oppression and corruption through mystic music.  They also demanded the necessity of spreading messages across the globe at the present chaotic world.
