The film and the violent mob attack on US in Libya
The murder of the US ambassador to Libya and three other American diplomats in Benghazi on Wednesday is, indeed, tragic as any untimely, unnatural death is. For US citizens, the deaths would naturally appear more tragic as the incident took place on the anniversary of September 11, the day that witnessed killing of some 3,000 fellow citizens in a terrorist attack on their Twin Tower 11 years ago, no matter that it is yet to be properly established as to who had carried out the attack. What, however, should appear more worrying for the humanity, in general, and the American citizens, in particular, is that nobody knows as to when such terrorist attacks would stop because of the US administration’s crudely self-seeking inhuman policies particularly towards the oil-rich West Asia and hostilities towards Islam.
The violent mob attack on the US mission in Benghazi, which left four US diplomats dead, appears to have been caused by an American film, Innocence of Muslims, which is not at all politically innocent in terms of its tone, tenor and content towards Islam and its prophet. The film, produced by an Israeli-American Zionist, Sam Bacile, and promoted by the Florida pastor Terry Jones, who earned infamy by burning the Qur’an the other day, has reportedly mocked at Islam and portrayed its prophet as a womaniser, homosexual, child abuser, fool, religious fake and bloodthirsty, while sleeping with women, talking about killing children and referring to a donkey as ‘the first Muslim animal.’ One does not need to be a pundit to understand that such a film, shown in places, would gravely hurt Muslim sensibilities. Even a former cabinet minister of Israel, Michael Melchior, has observed that ‘as Jew and Israeli rabbi’ he is ‘ashamed of the demeaning style and language of this film’.
But the US administration, which has encroached on the freedom of expression of its citizens on many grounds in the past decade, has done nothing about the repulsive film in the name of freedom of expression. It is time that the US administration realised that critical historical analysis of a religion is one and abusing the religion, any religion for that matter, and its prophet is another. That different religions and their prophets still have millions of followers is a testimony to the inner strength of the religions and the prophets in question, which calls for respect of the political authorities the world over. The aberration may result in an untoward consequence, of which, as it appears, the four diplomats are tragic victims.
The US administration has ‘strongly condemned the outrageous attack’ on its mission in Benghazi and found that it was not the people of Lybia, rather a ‘savage group of fundamentalists’ had conducted the violent attack. While the murder of the diplomats is really condemnable, it is important for the US administration to realise that millions of democratically oriented people across the world find US-led unilateral attacks of the west in different countries, which leave thousands of innocent men, women and children dead, are nothing more or less than acts of ‘savagery.’ The humanity needs to get rid of both — the US-led self-seeking ‘savagery’ and that of the rest, which actually occurs primarily as hapless reactions to the US-led savagery. However, for a peaceful world free of such ‘savageries’, what the democratically oriented people of the world need to do is to put united resistance against the imperialist, as well as racist, policies of the United States and its western allies towards the rest of the globe.
