Leaders of different left leaning political parties on Friday demanded an immediate withdrawal of the latest proposed increase in the price of power brought into effect from September 1.
Jatiya Mukti Council, Nayaganatantrik Ganamorcha, Jatiya Ganatantrik Ganamancha and Jatiya Gana Front organised separate rallies in front of the National Press Club.
The convener of Jatiya Gana Front Tipu Biswas, said that the Awami League led government had increased power prices in six phases according to the prescription of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
At the rally, Jatiya Mukti Council secretary Faiezul Hakim said that the government had taken the quick rental system for power production which made a huge amount of loss of money and now was increasing the price to realise the loss.
Moreover, the selected businessmen aligned to the government were benefiting from the system, the left leader said.
Zafar Hossain, the convener of Naya Ganatantrik Ganamorcha said that the government had failed to fulfil their election pledges and were increasing the suffering of the people.
He demanded the punishment of those responsible for the Hallmark Group money scam from the nationalised Sonali Bank immediately.
The convener of Jatiya Ganatantrik Ganamorcha, Masud Khan called on the government to take steps to stop the looting of people’s properties by ruling party men.
