Rupayan Group fined Tk 40 lakh for river pollution

The Department of Environment on Sunday fined Rupayan Group Tk 40 lakh for polluting the River Sityalakhya.
An enforcement team of the DoE, led by director (enforcemnt) Mohammad Munir Chowdhury, conducted the drive, said in a press release.
Rupayan Port and Logistics Limited is situated at Dhamgar and Kuripara mouja of Bandar union in Narayanganj.
DoE official said the business group was trying to establish a container port near the river.
During the drive, DoE director ordered the managing director of Rupayan Group to stop all activities as the group was doing the work without any permission of the environment depertment.
He said Rupayan Group started the construction work to establish a private port on 27 acres of land on the east side of the river bank.
During a hearing at DoE, he said the business group already installed 21 pillars on the river bank.
Munir Chowdhury said in a DoE investigation, they found that Rupayan Group encroached 7088 square feet areas into the river.
