Gulistan-Jatrabari road a nightmare

Saibal Saha Sunny, Narayanganj

Thanks to New Age for expressing concern about the matter by covering it as a headline on Sunday July 22. As an inhabitant of Narayanganj, I would like to highlight the recent scenario which arose due to the flyover.
As a neighboring district of Dhaka, Narayanganj suffers most due to the unplanned construction of Mayor Hanif flyover. Nearly 1 lakh people commute to Dhaka from Narayanganj everyday. Among them are employees, students, businessmen etc. There are about 10 bus services under which about 300 buses operate daily. Moreover, there is a railway service provides commutes eight different times during the day. This shows how important the
Dhaka-Narayanganj communication system is.
Orion group is constructing the flyover under a deal with the government. Before starting, they should have considered how the miseries of the commuters’ could be minimized. But quite shockingly, they started their project without providing any alternative in the communication system. As a result, it now takes more than 2 hours to reach the capital from Narayanganj, though earlier it took 45-60 minutes. Recently, the condition has worsened due to the rain, along with lack of maintenance. As a result, vehicles are often seen stuck up in mud or potholes created in the road.
What is most alarming is that the authorities gave no information on how long it will take to complete the flyover. If immediate steps are not taken by the government, it may create a negative impression with the commuters’ sufferings getting worse everyday.
