RUCSU polls demanded

RU Correspondent

The left leaning student organisations at Rajshahi University on Sunday demanded election to the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union.
Around one hundred leaders and activists of the university units of Bangladesh Students’ Union, Socialist Students’ Front, Bangladesh Students’ Federation and Biplabi Chhatra Moitree brought out a procession on the campus to push for the demand.
The procession, under the banner of ‘progressive students’ union’, began at Shaheed Tapon Chhattar and ended there in a gathering after parading the campus.
Speakers at the rally said that the absence of RUCSU elections for the last 22 years has paralysed student politics. It has diminished the glory of student politics on the campus.
The students cannot raise their voice properly in their favour in the absence of their representatives at the university senate, speakers also said.
They ridiculed that the present government hold students’ polls at the primary school level keeps mum over students’ union at the university level.
The authorities concerned do not hold university level students’ union polls to maintain control over the students at their sweet will, they alleged.
BSU RU unit president Shipon Ahmed and general secretary Iftekharul Islam Shiplu, SSF convener Sohrab Hossain, BSF president Sham Sagor Mankin also addressed the programme, among others.
Election to the RUCSU has remained stalled for the last 22 years after the last election was held in 1989.
