Foreign travel tax increased

Foreign travel tax increased

The government has increased foreign travel tax up to Tk 500 for the international airline passengers, officials said.
The newly imposed tax rate has come into effect from July 1, the National Board of Revenue officials said.
The government has recently brought further amendment to the Determination of Foreign Travel Tax Rate Rules-2004, allowing increased travel tax for airline passengers.
According to the amendment, travel tax was increased to Tk 3,000 from Tk 2,500 for airline passengers travelling to North and South America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa, China, Japan, Hong Kong, North and South Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Taiwan.
It increased to Tk 1,000 from Tk 800 for travelling to SAARC countries and to Tk 2,500 from Tk 2,000 for travelling to rest of the countries, the officials said.
Tk 500 travel tax for waterway passengers and Tk 300 for travelling through land ports will remain unchanged until further amendment, the NBR notification said.
Anwar Hossain, ticketing and reservation executive of  Travel House Limited, told New Age that passengers who bought the tickets before the enhanced tax rate came into effect would have to pay cash to their respective operators at international airports.
A number of the outbound passengers at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, however, faced problems while the aviation operators were collecting newly increased travel tax at the airport as they unaware about the increased tax.
Jahidul Islam, assistant director in charge of Migrant Welfare Desk at the Dhaka airport, admitted that a number of the migrant workers faced problems at the airport as they were unaware of the enhanced rate of tax.
He suggested the NBR authorities should insert advertisements in newspapers spelling out the enhanced rate of travel tax to allay confusion in this regard.
