Khaleda asks lieutenants to end row in BNP’s local committees

Rashed Ahmed Mitul

Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson, Khaleda Zia, in a bid to revamp the party, has assigned her party’s joint secretary generals to end the intra-party bickering at field levels by the first week of August.
A close aide to the BNP
chairperson told New Age that she had given the instruction to resolve the internal strife over leaderships in different city and district committees under six divisions.
He said the joint secretaries general had been asked to accomplish their tasks by mid-Ramadan. This is also aimed at giving momentum to the current anti-government agitation.
According to the instruction, each joint secretary general was asked to identify and resolve organisational problems in one division.
Amanullah Aman was given the responsibility to deal with the problems of Khulna division, Mizanur Rahman Minu of Chittagong division, Barkatullah Bulu of  Rajshahi division, M Shajahan of Sylhet division,  Salahuddin Ahmed of  Barisal division and Mahbubuddin Khokon of Dhaka division.
A joint secretary general said problems and disappointments were evident among mid-level leaders for not forming full-fledged committees at local levels. Some leaders are not happy with the existing committees.
Out of 75 political districts of BNP, a number of organisational districts have no full-fledged committee. Some committees have only president and general secretary whereas BNP’s last national council was held in December, 2009. Even in Dhaka city and Rangpur there are only convening committees.
BNP insiders say problems over formation of committees exist in 10 to 15 districts and cities, including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Sylhet, Sunamganj,  Noakhali, Comilla, Chittagong, Barisal and Manikganj.
Although a full-fledged committee for Sariatpur district BNP was announced by the BNP high command on July 8, a good number of party leaders and activists of the district rejected the committee. The dissidents have been pressing for cancellation of the new committee.
Joint secretary general Amanullah Aman said he would sit with leaders of the districts under Khulna division to resolve organisational problems.
He said incomplete committees would be given a complete shape through discussion with all concerned and hoped that he would be able to accomplish his task before the deadline.
On Thursday Aman sat with leaders of Kushtia, Magura, Bagerhat, Chuadanga and Meherpur districts at the BNP central office to resolve internal conflicts over local leadership.
Joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed who has been given the responsibility of Barisal division, told New Age that he would sort out the problems.
Another joint secretary general M Shahjahan, who is looking after the party affairs in Sylhet division, said that he had already started talks with the district level leaders.
Replying to a question, he said Sylhet city and district committees were incomplete. He admitted that there were some problems in Sunamganj district centring the committee.
