A man was killed and 20 were injured as two compartments and the engine of a train derailed into a ditch near the Dhirasram railway station in the Gazipur district headquarters on Friday.
The police said that the intercity Sundarban Express headed for Khulna from Dhaka veered off the railway and fell into the ditch about 9:00am. A man died on the spot and 20 became injured.
Train communications on the Dhaka–Mymensingh, Dhaka–Rajshahi and Dhaka–Khulna routes had been suspended for about seven hours because of the accident. Train service on the routes resumed about 4:00pm.
The deceased was Ruhul Amin Helal, 28, from Charbhanga at Bhanga in Pabna. Two of the injured could be identified: railway employee Mojammal Haque, 45, and
Lipa Begum, 23, a passenger, from Srimangal in Moulvibazar.
Local people rescued the injured and sent them to hospital.
Fire fighters from the Joydevpur station conducted the rescue operation. They sent the body to the Gazipur General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
The communications minister, Obaidul Quader, who is also the railway minister, visited the spot about 12:30pm.
‘Two investigation committees have been set up — one by the Bangladesh Railway and the other by the Eastern Railway Division. The railway committee will submit its report in seven days and the eastern division committee will submit the report in four days. The government will take action based on the findings,’ he said.
The minister directed the authorities concerned to give Tk 1 lakh in compensation to the family of the deceased.
