World renowned movies offeredCultural Correspondent
Some of the most world famous movies by the finest directors of modern day cinema are being offered at an ongoing film festival titled El Scorcho Film Festival at the Dhaka Art Centre.
The six-day festival organised by Le Putas Del Cinema (a group of Dhaka based media enthusiasts), features famous movies mostly directed by renowned American directors like Stanley Kubrick, Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Woody Allen , Spike Lee and
It also includes one movie each from Spain and UK.
The festival continues in two phases: the first phase began on July 5 and ended on July 7 while the second phase will begin on July 12 and will wrap up on July 14. Each day’s programme has two feature films: one at 3:00 pm and the other at 6:00pm.
Tarantino’s ‘Inglorious Basterds’ and Kubrick’s ‘Dr. Strangelove or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb’ (winner of BAFTA award for Best British film) were screened on the first day of the event. The first phase also offered Spanish movie ‘All About My Mother’ (Academy Award winner for best foreign language film) by Pedro Almodóvar, Woody Allen’s ‘Anny Hall’ (winner of four Academy Awards including the Best Picture), Spike Lee’s ‘Do The Right Thing’ ( winner of many critic awards around the world) and popular Hollywood movie ‘Jaws’ by Spielberg.
The second phase of the festival will begin with screening two horror films The Descent by British director Neil Marshall and The Woman by American director Lucky Mckee. For the session on July 14, the organizers has arranged for an audience choice sessions and the most viewed two films from the festival will be screened.
On the concluding day popular animation film ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and another American mystery film Blue Velvet by David Lynch will be screened.
The organisers informed that they have plans to promote local young film makers and their works in future by arranging such kind of film festivals.
