The tea workers of Habiganj have set a unique example of their affection and love for the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, as they have adorned her with two gold bangles.
An emotionally charged ambience was created when the tea workers adorned the premier
with the bangles, made of the money they deposited for two years, at a simple function at Ganabhaban in Dhaka Tuesday afternoon.
After the event, the press secretary to the prime minister, Abul Kalam Azad, briefed reporters.
About 5,000 workers of the district deposited the money — 50 paisa every day. The tea workers also gave Hasina a written felicitation and sought her cooperation for solving their problems, including unemployment.
The tea workers told the prime minister that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had given them the voting right. ‘And since then our election symbol is ‘boat’.’
They also said the Awami League was not in power for 25 years, but they did not leave the party despite repression and torture. ‘We wholeheartedly uphold the ideology of Bangabandhu.’
Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister said, ‘We do politics for the welfare of hapless and distressed people and when we get responsibility for running the country, we try to do something for you.’
She said the aim of her government was to ensure welfare of the tea workers.
Hasina gave a patent hearing to the problems of the tea workers and assured them of solving those.
Later, the tea workers performed songs in honour of the prime minister.
