Steel mills fined in Ctg, Tongi

Staff Correspondent . Chittagong

Two steel mills in Chittagong and Tongi were fined on Sunday for air pollution and violation of rules.
In the Chittagong city, the Department of Environment fined a steel re-rolling mill at Nasirabad Tk 25 lakh for emitting black fumes.
DoE director Jafar Alam said they summoned Benz Industries Limited after it was found polluting air with black fumes far exceeding the permitted level.
He further said they summoned Saleh Steel, another steel re-rolling mill in the city, for the same offence, adding same punitive measure would be taken against them when they would appear before the DoE.
Yet another plant, Baizid Steel, also operating in the city area, was served with a summons for not having an environment clearance certificate.
At Tongi in Gazipur, a steel mill was fined Tk 7.52 lakh for manufacturing goods without permission from the DoE, a release said.
A DoE team led by its director (enforcement) Mohammad Munir Chowdhury in a drive found Saika Steel Industries was in violation of the rules.
The mill had the permission for producing mild steel rods only but the DoE team found it manufacturing iron ingots, for which it required specific clearance from the regulatory body.
Most steel re-rolling mills in and around the capital have been running without the mandatory air pollution control facilities, posing serious health risks, the release added.
