Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra finished fifth in the Bangladesh Premier League after beating Team BJMC 3-2 in their last league match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
Winger Anwar Hossain scored two goals and helped Mohammad Yusuf score the other for Sheikh Russell, who cut their results in the professional league as they had become third in the previous four editions of the competition.
Russell took control of the match very early, scoring two goals within 20 minutes of the first half thanks to Anwar and Yusuf’s strikes in the 18th and 20th minutes respectively.
Anwar tapped in a square pass from Yusuf to score the first goal, while Yusuf scored the second placing a rebounder into BJMC net after Anwar’s close range attempt was parried by goalkeeper Atiqul Islam Tarik.
BJMC pulled a goal back two minutes before half-time when their Nigerian playmaker Azugan Abdul Rasheed tucked in Bangoura Ismael’s cross from the left.
Anwar, however, made it 3-1in the 82nd minute, finishing from close after Yusuf’s shot on target came his way after deflecting off a BJMC defender.
BJMC’s Guinean striker Bangoura, the highest scorer of the league with 17 goals, brought some excitement in the match when he found the back of the Russell net from a free-kick taken from just outside the penalty area five minutes from time.
BJMC ended their campaign in fourth place with 33 points from 20 matches. Russell, on the other hand, earned 32 points from their 20 games.
