WAR CRIMES TRIAL
ICT order today on Sayedee’s plea to get family’s care at hospital
Staff CorrespondentThe International Crimes Tribunal 1 on Tuesday posted for today its order on an application of detained Jamaat nayeb-e-amir Delwar Hossain Sayedee seeking permission for his family to attend him at hospital.
The tribunal, set the date as defence counsel M Tajul Islam moved the petition saying that Sayedee was unable to move without help.
Sayedee, the first man to face trial on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity he allegedly committed during the war of independence in 1971, is undergoing treatment at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital.
On Tuesday the investigation officer of the case, M Helal Uddin, was cross-examined by defence lawyers for the 25th day in the tribunal of Justice Nizamul Huq, Justice Anwarul Haque and judge AKM Zahir Ahmed.
During the cross-examination, the investigation officer admitted that there was an error in a sketch map he had submitted to the tribunal in support of his deposition against the accused.
Senior defence counsel Mizanul Islam wanted to know from Helal whether the sketch map marked ‘1’ he had submitted to the tribunal mentioned Parerhat Market though it is shown in a separate sketch map, marked ‘K’.
Helal admitted the mistake and said the sketch map in question actually shows another place called, Indurkani.
The defence counsel said his question was, ‘What the sketch map says.’
When Mizanul submitted that the explanation of the IO should not be recorded, the tribunal said that it could be recorded as it came in reply to a question the defence had asked about the sketch map contradicting the investigator’s previous statement about the location of Parerhat Market.
Mizanul submitted that in that case he would withdraw his question.
At this point, prosecutor Syed Haider Ali submitted that the question had been asked and the answer was also given.
Following a debate over the issue, the tribunal agreed to omit the question from the defence.
Sayedee was indicted on Oct 3, 2011.
He lost his mother later in the same month. His eldest son died of heart attack June 13. Sayedee had a heart attack on his way back from his son’s funeral on the evening of the next day.
He is undergoing treatment at the Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital.
Also known as the war crimes tribunal, the ICT was instituted for the trial of the 1971 war crimes suspects.
