Journalists, cutting across the opinion line, held a demonstration in the city on Tuesday to press the demand for the interrogation of ATN Bangla chairman Mahfuzur Rahman by the police for the remarks he recently made in London about the murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi.
The members of National Press Club, both the factions of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and Dhaka Union of Journalists as well as Dhaka Reporters’ Unity also demanded arrest of the murderers of Sagar, Runi and all other journalists including Jamal Uddin, a journalist of Jessore-based newspaper Gramer Kagoj killed on Friday.
At a human chain they formed in front of National Press Club, they also demanded the arrest of killers of all the journalists.
In 10 years, they said, 27 journalists were killed and no killer was brought to book.
They denounced the culture of immunity for which no killer was brought to book.
They said that they would announce tough countrywide programmes if the government failed to arrest the killers of Sagar, Runi and Jamal.
Journalist community leaders demanded that the intelligence agency investigating the murders of the journalist couple, ought to interrogate Mahfuzur Rahman for his remarks seeking to mislead the investigation into the twin murders.
They condemned the remarks of Mahfuzur Rahman.
BFUJ president Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury described the remarks of ATN Bangla as defamatory,
obscene and vulgar, aimed at distorting the facts.
Unless Mahfuzur proves his statement that journalists used to attend parties at Sagar’s residence he has to be punished, he demanded.
He announced that the journalists would form a human chain on Sunday if the government failed to meet the demands.
Another BFUJ faction president Ruhul Amin Gazi said that life of no journalist was safe unless the murders were brought to book.
DUJ president Abdus Shahid said all the killers should brought to book.
DRU president Shakhawat Hossain Badshah called it mysterious why the journalists were killed and why the killers were not arrested.
The community leaders said they would march towards the prime minister’s office on June 26 to press their demands.
