Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology teachers will boycott all administrative activities except those related with students, as they resume their demand for the resignation of the institution’s vice-chancellor and pro vice-chancellor.
Giving an ultimatum for June 30, they announced the fresh round of protests at a human chain on the university campus on Tuesday.
They said they would shun all programmes arranged by the university administration, such as receptions, farewells, sports events, inauguration ceremonies, workshops, seminars, conferences and other functions until the VC SM Nazrul Islam and pro-VC M Habibur Rahman resign.
They also vowed to form human chains, bring out silent processions and to stage sit-ins every week in order to push forward their demands.
‘If the VC and pro-VC do not quit from their posts by June 30, we will announce further demonstrations to compel them to meet our demands,’ said the general secretary of the BUET Teachers Association, Md Ashraful Islam.
The teachers said that they called off their previous strike on the assurance of the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, on May 5.
It was frustrating that no initiatives were found for the proper investigation of the ‘irregularities’ in administration by the probe committee formed on May 3, let alone the resignation of the VC and Pro VC, they alleged.
BUET TA president, Md Mujibur Rahman, vice president Maksud Helali, treasurer Ataur Rahman, joint secretary Golam Zakaria, along with more than 200 university teachers attended the human chain.
They have been protesting for the resignations of the VC and Pro VC for their alleged involvement in politically motivated recruitments, irregularities and autocratic attitude at the institution.
