Apparel worker killed as bus plunges into ditch at Ashulia

An apparel worker died and more than 50 became injured as a bus carrying the workers plunged into a roadside ditch at Moragang of Ashulia on the outskirt of the capital on Wednesday morning.
The police said that the deceased was Saiful Islam Babul, 35, a sewing supervisor at Cosmopolitan Industries Private Limited at Khejurbagan in the Ashulia industrial belt. He was from Uchkhali at Hatia in Noakhali.
The injured were admitted to hospital. All the injured are workers of Cosmopolitan Industries Private Limited.
Witnesses said that the bus headed for Ashulia had plunged into a roadside ditch about 8:00am, in which one died and 50 others became injured.
The five who were seriously injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical Collage Hospital.
The bus was carrying apparel workers from areas such as Tongi and Mirpur was going to the factory at Ashulia.
Ruksana Parvin, one of the passengers who was injured, said that the bus was carrying at least 60 workers.
Fire fighters, lawmen and army personnel rushed in and conducted a rescue operation. Traffic remained suspended for an hour during the rescue operation.
The factory management announced a holiday for the day soon after the accident.
The Ashulia police officer-in-charge, Badrul Islam, said that the body had been sent to morgue for a post-mortem examination.
The police recovered
the bus.
