RUET takes action against Sajib’s killers

RU Correspondent

Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology has expelled six students for life and suspended three others for three years and one for two years for their involvement in the murder of Abdul Aziz Khan Sajib on campus in March this year.
The decision was made on Tuesday by the disciplinary committee formed by university authorities to investigate the incident.
All 10 expelled and suspended students are leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, a student’s association body belonging to the Awami League’s university unit.
Sajib, 25 was an organising secretary of the BCL RUET Ziaur Rahman Hall unit and a fourth year student in the civil engineering department. He, along with Ali Hasan Choudhury Rony, secretary of Ziaur Rahman Hall BCL unit, were attacked by activists belonging to a rival faction of the BCL over an ongoing feud.
The 6 expelled students are fourth year electronic engineering department students Mohaiminul Haque Polash, Sultan Rajibul Islam, Tanvir Ahmed and Zahangir Alam, third year civil engineering student Sufian Alam and third year mechanical engineering department, Md Arafat Al Jami Rezwan. Third year civil engineering department students Mirza Abu Golam Rasel, Jayan Ahmed and fourth year student of the same department Kazi Mastiyak Ahmed were suspended for three years. Aminul Islam, a third year student in the civil engineering department was suspended for two years.
The fatal incident occurred on 12 March at around 10:30 am in the university cafeteria where Sajib and Rony were having breakfast.
Munna, Shahid Lt. Salim Hall unit BCL President, along with his Joint Secretary, Sultan Rajibul Alam, activists Polash and Jayan and between 10 to 12 other activists attacked and severely beat Sajib, as well Rony.
They used iron rods, sticks, hammers and knives in the assault.
The motive was a feud over an on-the-spot selection for the electrical and electronic engineering department’s tour the previous month.
Injured Sajib and Rony were first admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital. The following day they were transferred to Pangu Hospital in Dhaka.
As Sajib’s condition deteriorated, he was rushed to Habib Clinic in Savar on the outskirts of the city on March 15. After fighting for his life for three days he died on March 16.
However before his death, on March 14, Sajib with the assistance of his family, filed a case with Motihar police station. They accused 14 BCL men for the attack which was converted to a murder case after Sajib’s death.
Rony who was also seriously injured alongside Sajib said ‘we cannot accept the disciplinary committee’s decision because other culprits behind Sajib’s death have been saved’.
Demanding the immediate arrest of the killers, he also called upon university authorities to take further steps against those who are yet to be punished.
RUET vice-chancellor Sirajul Karim Chowdhury chaired the disciplinary committee, while pro-vice chancellor Muhammad Mortuja Ali, student welfare adviser Dr Shamimur Rahman and deans and department heads of the university were present at the meeting.
RUET student adviser Dr Shamimur Rahman, said the disciplinary committee took the decision after scrutinising the responses of concerned students over the show-cause notice served by the authorities and on the basis of the probe committee report.
RUET vice-chancellor was not available for comment.
