Leaders of the national committee to protect oil, gas, mineral resources, power and ports at a rally on Saturday called on the Awami League-led government to take steps to reduce power prices and to ensure uninterrupted electric supply.
The organisation’s convener Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah at a rally in front of the National Press Club said that the government could increase power generation from old public-sector plants to address the power shortage immediately.
He urged the cancellation of quick rental power plants saying that they had created huge monetary burden on the power sector.
The organisation held the rally to drum up public support for its countrywide  rallies in front of power offices scheduled for Monday.
The leaders called on the government to pass the bill that sought a ban on the export of mineral resources.
Siddiqur Rahman, Abdus Salam, Saiful Huq, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Zonayed Saki, Mushrefa Mishu and Razequazzaman Ratan addressed the rally that was presided over by Zulfiqar Ali.
A procession followed the rally.
