Immediate RUCSU polls demanded

RU Correspondent

Rajshahi University students on Saturday held demonstrations on the campus, demanding immediate election to the university central students’ union.
Several hundred students of different departments brought out a procession, orgiansed by university unit Socialist Students’ Front, from the organisation tent at around 11:0am and it ended in a gathering at Tukitaki Chattar on the campus parading throughout the university streets.
Meanwhile, leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Students’ Union formed a human chain in front of the university central library at around 11:30am on the same demand.
Speakers at the programmes said no election to RUCSU for the last 22 years had paralysed student politics and tainted the glory of student politics.
They said when the present government organised polls at the primary level but why no step was taken to hold election at the university level was not understandable.
The authorities are not holding election to students’ unions at universities to deprive the students of their rights and destroy students politics, they alleged.
They said though RUCSU had no function, fees, however, were being collected from students for the past 22 years in the name of RUCSU.
They asked for what the amount was spent.
Participants in the programme vowed to launch a tougher movement to press for their demand.
Chhatra Front leaders also protested at the repression of the girl students of the university by activists of ruling party-backed students’ body.

Do you think it is justified for the scheduled banks to be reluctant to recruit women as they think that female staff will need to be given maternity leave and transport facilities?
