Staff Correspondent

An opposition activist was killed and 70 people were injured in clashes between activists of Awami League and BNP in different districts on Sunday evening on the eve of today's hartal.
According to United News of Bangladesh, village doctor Jahangir Alam Khokon, a BNP activist, was
killed and seven others were injured when ruling party men reportedly attacked a procession of BNP-Jamaat at Poddarhat in Lakshmipur sadar upazila on Saturday night.
Police and witnesses said a group of ruling party supporters, led by
Juba League leader Bablu, had attacked the procession brought out by
the opposition alliance in support of the two-day dawn-to-dusk shutdown beginning today.
The attackers also allegedly opened fire on the opposition activists, leaving
eight of them seriously injured.
Of the injured, Jahangir Alam Khokon, 45, son of Maqbul Hossain of Rashidpur village in the upazila, was taken to Noakhali General Hospital where
he died at about 11:00pm.
Another injured, Mostafa Kamal, a local Jamaat activist, was admitted
to the sadar hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.
A tense situation was prevailing in the area.
Police reinforcement has been sent to the area to avert further
trouble.
New Age correspondents in Natore, Feni, Faridpur and Bagerhat reported incidents of clashes between pro- and anti-hartal
activists.
