IGP under JS panel fire over Sagar-Runi, Elias issues

Staff Correspondent

The parliamentary standing committee on home ministry on Thursday strongly criticised the inspector general of police, Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, for his unwillingness to discuss the issue of the disappearance of Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Elias Ali.
Sources said the committee chairman and members had asked the IGP about the progress in the investigation of Elias Ali’s disappearance, Sagar-Runi killings and other sensational cases. But the IGP said the cases were under investigation and so it would not be right to discuss about the matters, meeting source said.
Committee member Mujibul Haque Chunnu said, ‘Everything can be discussed in parliament. None can challenge a topic of discussion in parliament.’
The IGP said that the police were trying their best to find out Elias Ali and return him to his family. The police are making effort in this regard, he added.
The standing committee chairman Abdus Salam presided over the meeting. Officers of parliament secretariat and the home ministry were asked to leave the meeting before the issue of Elias Ali was raised.
Home minister Sahara Khatun and her deputy Shamsul Haque attended the meeting but did not make any comments on the matter.
