A travesty of justice

An enraged citizen, Dhaka

THIS is a weird country where suspected corrupt ministers/politicians get a slap on the wrist for not being caught red-handed although all signs indicate towards the final destination of the money assumed to be Tk 70 lakh as the minister’s house but spoiled by the driver of the vehicle by driving it into the Border Guards Bangladesh headquarters. Maybe, the driver was aware of the presence of the huge sum of money from the conversation of the passengers and wanted to become a ‘hero’ of having unearthed illegal money earned through bribe-for-jobs promises. Apparently, the poor driver is paying the price for his good intentions. His whereabouts are unknown and the law enforcement agencies may not even bother to look for him knowing fully well his life may be in danger, just because no formal complaint has been lodged with the police, either by his family or anybody else.
Weird country indeed, because the minister who resigned in the face of alleged corruption charges against him has been given a slap on the wrist and appointed as a minister without portfolio. What a travesty of justice. If the prime minister was so keen to reward him, she could well have appointed him as a special adviser for corruption control.
