JU teachers skip class, exam for VC’s resign

JU Correspondent

Amid their movement for removal of Jahangirnagar University vice-chancellor for ‘corruption’, majority of the teachers at mathematics department on Monday began skipping classes and examinations in demand of cancellation of illegal recruitment of additional teachers by the vice-chancellor.
Teachers at the university, under the banner of Shikshak Samaj, launched a movement against the vice-chancellor in February, and on March 31, they began agitation for his immediate removal, accusing him of indulging in gross corruption.
The agitating mathematics teachers said the vice-chancellor on March 10 had appointed three teachers in the department exceeding the requirement on political grounds and they would not return to the classrooms until appointment of the additional teachers was cancelled.
They said they had informed the departmental chair Laek Sazzad Andallah of their stand.
The Jahangirnagar University Teacher Association secretary, Sharifuddin, also a teacher of the mathematics department, said no teacher would take class or examinations unless the illegal recruitment was cancelled.
Laek Sazzad Andallah, who is loyal to the vice-chancellor, Shariff Enamul Kabir, found the boycott of class and examination by ‘some’ teachers was nothing but a conspiracy against him and the university administration.
‘The appointment of new teachers was carried out as per the university rules,’ he said.
He also claimed he had consulted with the agitating teachers and assured them of solving their ‘problem’.
Convener of Shikshak Samaj Nasim Akter Hossain said they had enough information of the vice-chancellor’s corruption and irregularities and they would continue their movement till the vice-chancellor resigned.
Teachers loyal to the vice-chancellor, in the meantime, brought out a silent procession on the campus and formed a human chain denouncing the role of the agitating teachers and accused them of creating instability on the campus through skipping class and examination.
