Journalists’ rally today to demand arrest of killers

Staff Correspondent

Media professional will hold a rally today in front of the National Press Club in the city as a part of their ongoing countrywide demonstrations demanding arrest and trial of the killers of the journalist couple Sagar and Runi.
The two factions of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and Dhaka Union of Journalists, National Press Club and Dhaka Reporters Unity will organise the rally at 11:00am to press home their four-point demand, including arrest and trial of the killers of Sagar and Runi.
Maasranga Television news editor Golam Mustofa Sarwar, better known as Sagar Sarowar, and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Nahar Runi were murdered in their rented flat at West Razabazar in the capital on February 11.
They also demanded trial of the killings of all journalists across the country, an end to repression on them and freedom of the press.
On March 1, president of one faction of the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, announced the programmes after a token hunger strike by the journalist community in front of the National Press Club to press the demands.
As part of the programmes, leaders of the journalist community visited different districts to attend the two-week long protest programme against the sensational double murder and to press home their other demands.
In a statement, the leaders called upon all journalists to join the rally today. The next course of the movement will be announced from the rally.
According to media reports, 25 journalists were killed in 10 years and 14 of them were killed during the tenure of the Awami League-led government.
