Launch capsize death toll rises to 147Staff Correspondent
Two more bodies were found afloat in the River Meghna on Saturday, taking to 147 the death toll from the capsize of motor launch the Shariatpur 1 in the river in Munshiganj on March 13.
One of the deceased was Afzal, a bridegroom who along with the bride Shanta and 20 other relatives boarded on the launch headed for Dhaka.
The launch, with more than 200 passengers on board, left Naria in Shariatpur and capsized in the river at Gazaria early March 13.
The bride was found dead a day after the accident had taken place. Six bodies were recovered on Friday, 27 on Thursday, 76 on Wednesday and 36 before midnight on the day the accident had taken place, the district administration said.
The police and Coast Guard on Saturday said that they had found the two bodies afloat in the river few kilometers from where the launch had capsized.
Four of the bodies recovered have so far remained unidentified till Saturday evening, the officials said, adding, the survivors and the families of the victims, reported to the administration that eight people were still missing.
Many bodies are feared to have drifted away, the rescuers said.
The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority chairman, Md Samsuddoha Khondaker, told New Age on Saturday that they would continue with their search till Sunday.
