Russia offers support for socioeconomic dev

United News of Bangladesh . Dhaka

The Russian Federation has expressed its keen interest to increase its cooperation and support for development in Bangladesh’s socioeconomic and cultural sectors.
This was conveyed by the newly appointed ambassador of Russia, Alexander A Nikolaev, while presenting his credentials to the president, Zillur Rahman, at Bangabhaban on Thursday.
‘We’re interested to work together for the socioeconomic development of the two countries,’ he said.
During the meeting, the Russian envoy said Russia and Bangladesh had been enjoying excellent relations over the last 40 years.
About the upcoming visit of the Bangladesh prime minister to Russia Alexander said a number of memorandums of understanding between Bangladesh and Russia would be signed during the visit in September-October next.
Alexander said his government was also keen to bolster trade and commerce relations with Bangladesh.
Welcoming the ambassador to Bangabhaban,
the president said Bangladesh attached great importance to its relations with Russia and continues to consider it as one of the most dependable friends and partners.
The president recalled the immense support extended by the then Soviet Union during Bangladesh’s war of liberation in 1971.
Secretaries concerned to the president’s office and senior officials of the foreign ministry were present.
Earlier, the ambassador was given a guard of honour by the President’s Guard Regiment on the premises of Bangabhaban.
