Power cos to watch if shops follow shutdown timeSadia Afrin
Power authorities in the capital will mobilise their monitoring units to make sure that shops and business houses are closed by
8:00pm as the power demand has suddenly increased with the very onset of hot weather.
Dhaka Electricity Supply Company’s managing director Manjur Rahman said the company would soon strengthen its monitoring to enforce the government order to shut down markets and shopping malls by 8:00pm.
The company’s decision came as many shops in different parts of the capital remain open even after 8:00pm, a limit set to handle power crisis during peak hours.
Promulgated by the last caretaker government the order was again brought into effect in February 2010 to reduce load shedding and ensure better power supply for irrigation.
Currently, the country generates 3,800 megawatt electricity daily on average against an estimated demand of 5,500mw on average that rises to nearly 8,000mw in summer.
Bangladesh Shop Owners’ Association organising secretary Shah Alam Khandaker brushed aside the allegation that shops in the city kept open even after the stipulated hour.
‘Some roadside shops may remain open after 8:00pm,’ he said, adding that any government action for strict enforcement of the rule would be welcomed.
