Chinese artwork show at National Museum

A two-week first solo art exhibition by Rashida Akhter is being held at Bangladesh National Museum in Shahbagh. The show, inaugurated on September 26 will remain open from 11:00am to 8:00pm till October 10. The show is organised on the occasion of the 60th founding anniversary of the Peoples Republic of China and the 34th anniversary of establishment of Sino-Bangladesh diplomatic ties. Around 26 artworks following the traditional Chinese styles are on display. The artworks show the human figures, animals, fruits, flowers, trees and rocks. All the artworks are beautifully depicted with vivid colours. The artist has used Chinese ink, watercolour and mixed media in her artworks. She has shown her skill using the Chinese art technique in the artworks. She has presented the darkness and lightness of an image. She has also presented the front and back of her subjects. Viewers will get the distance and different dimensions of the images in her artworks. The artwork titled ‘Bamboo’ depicts a bamboo tree in black and white with flat dimension. The image reflects the ancient flavour of Chinese style. Her artwork ‘Bonsai’ shows the same art form. In most of her artworks she has followed the traditional Chinese art style. The artist has also painted landscapes and water lilies using the Chinese technique of watercolour. They are presented in lyrical and realistic dimensions. In the artwork ‘Sweet Dream’ a baby with red ribbon is sleeping comfortably on the leaf of a water lily. The artwork ‘Peony’ presents the already bloomed and blooming flowers. The artist has narrated the environmental changes in late winter when the old leaves fall down and new leaves wait to come up. ‘As an amateur, I faced problems in learning the technique of traditional Chinese art style. In this situation my Chinese friend Ren helped me to learn. I learnt lesson from her for several months and during this time I also found professor Huo Hai Ying as an art teacher’, said Rashida Akther.
New talent hunt programme on RTV

RTV will start a new talent hunt programme titled ‘Black Horse RTV The Golden Key: Abar Tomra Gau’ from October 9. The programme will be aired every Friday and Tuesday at 9:20pm. According to the organisers, they have already selected a total of 30 contestants who sing well and who have released music albums. ‘But, we think, these singers have failed to reach to the mass audience for lack of adequate publicity,’ said the organisers. The contestants include Rupom, Arif, Shan, Swrikriti, Shohag, Khea, former ATN Taraka Farhana and Poly Saontany among others. ‘There are many talented singers in our country who have already brought out music albums. They sing very well,’ the producer of the talent hunt programme Izaz Swapan continues, ‘but the television channels of our country are busy with finding out new talented singers. The singers who sing well and have already published music albums are becoming frustrated.’ Farhana told New Age, ‘I will participate in the second episode of the programme.’ Asked about the outcome of the programme she said, ‘The result of the programme will depend on our performances’. ‘Through the talent hunt programmes the new talents get a little fame for some days. But they gradually disappear from the mind of the people due to inadequate publicity,’ she added. The judge panel includes Samina Chowdhury, Bappa Majumder, Sawkat Ali Emon and Ahmed Imtiaz Bulul. Radio Jockey Afrin will be present as host at the programme.
Channel-i celebrates its 10th founding anniv

The first digital television channel i celebrated its 10th founding anniversary on Thursday by bringing out a rally and telecasting celebration programmes live from its Tejgoan office. The rally was brought out from the premises of Bangladesh Shishu Academy at 10:00am and ended at the National Press Club. A number of celebrities including the participants of the talent hunt programme Khude Gaanraj joined the rally. They celebrated its stepping into the 11th year by flying balloons. A number of celebrities including noted poets, writers and singers, Channel-i’s managing director Faridur Reza Sagor, its director and head of news Shykh Siraj and Assaduzzaman Noor MP took part in the programme. Today they will telecast programmes live from Chalachchitra mela premises at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. The programmes will start at 11:00am and continue till 5:00pm. Channel i will telecast Humayun Amhed’s drama ‘Bankumari’ today at 7:50pm. Humayun Faridi, Maznun Mizan, Jayanta Chatterjee and Jarbini will impersonate different characters in the drama.
Madonna vows never to marry again

Singer Madonna has revealed on a US TV chat show that she will never get married again, reports BBC. Appearing on David Letterman’s show, the 51-year-old said she would rather be ‘run over by a train’ than tie the knot for a third time. The star, now divorced from film director Guy Ritchie, also admitted it was not always easy being alone. ‘Being a single parent means you’re kind of in charge of everything,’ said the singer. She added: ‘You can’t go ‘hey, can you give the kids a bath?’ There’s no job sharing.’ The star, who recently released her third greatest hits album called Celebration, referred to George W Bush’s period as US president, joking that her eight year marriage had only lasted ‘the Bush years’. She then added: ‘It was a good time to be out of America.’ During her eighth appearance on Letterman’s show, Madonna revealed she had never visited a New York pizzeria. So Letterman took the pop star - who is famous for her healthy diet and lifestyle - to a local restaurant where she was seen eating pizza.
Hopper admitted to hospital

Easy Rider star Dennis Hopper has been taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms, according to his publicist, reports BBC. The 73-year-old was examined at a New York clinic after complaining of stomach ailments associated with flu. The Hollywood actor was forced to pull out of a number of interviews to promote his new US TV serial Crash. Hopper plays music producer Ben Cendars in the drama, an adaptation of the film which was the winner of the best picture Oscar at the 2006 Oscars. No further details of his condition have been given. The Oscar-nominated actor is also an accomplished writer, director and artist.
