Hasan Imam receives Naren
Biswas award

Eminent cultural personality Syed Hasan Imam was awarded this year’s Naren Biswas award in a programme at Shaukat Osman Memorial Auditorium of the Central Public Library on Monday.
   The programme was arranged by the recitation organisation ‘Kanthasilan’ on the occasion of the 64th birth anniversary of Professor Naren Biswas who was a legendary recitation artist and researcher of Bangla language and grammar.
   Apart from Syed Hasan Imam, International Theatre Institute president Ramendra Majumder, Dhaka University teacher Biswajit Gosh and trainer of Kanthasilan Mir Barkat, among others, took part in the discussion that was chaired by artist Qayyum Chowdhury.
   Kanthsilan trainer Golam Sarwar conducted the programme.
   Qayyum Chowdhury handed over the medal and credentials to Hasan Imam and said, ‘We are proud to award Syed Hasan Imam who is widely respected as one of the pioneer recitation artists in Bangladesh.’
   Expressing his happiness, Syed Hasan Imam said the award would serve as recognition of his attempt at recitation.
   Biswajit Gosh and Mir Barkat in their respective speeches described the life and works of Naren Biswas and said that Naren was a legendary reaction artist who had dedicated his life to accurate pronunciation of words.
   Naren Biswas also compiled a critical evolution of poetry and language from the age of the Charyapada till the modern day.
   In the programme, discussants protested against distorted pronunciation of Bangla words in FM radio services and television channels. They also protested at miss-spelling in the newspapers of the country.
   The discussion programme was followed by recitations by Syed Hasan Imam, Kazi Jafar Siddequi, Ashraful Alam, Laila Afroz, Hasan Arif, Belayet Hossain, Zahirul Haq Khan, Mahidul Islam, Rozina Wali Lina, Fazul Alam Pappu, Masqur-e- Sattar Kallal and Sayeed Ahmed.


Citycell-Channel-i Music Award
to be announced soon

Mobile phone operator Citycell, in association with private television Channel i, will announce the 5th Citycell-Channel i Music Award soon for talented singers and musicians.
   This was said at a press conference held at Channel i’s Tejgaon office on Tuesday.
   Impress Telefilm Ltd managing director Faridur Reza Sagar and Citycell head of marketing
   Anand Rajasingham, among others, spoke on the occasion.
   Faridur Reza Sagar said they wanted to recognise talented musicians and had been doing the task since 2004. They would continue programme.
   Pointing out that music was the expression of soul Anand Rajasingham said he was happy with the previous award giving ceremonies where eminent singers like Sabina
   Yasmin were honoured with lifetime achievement awards.
   The organisers told the media the 5th Citycell-Channel i Music Award would be given in 16 categories including lifetime achievements awards.
   The categories include classical instrument, classical vocal, Tagore song, Nazrul song, motion picture sound track, folk song, band music, lyricist, music direction, budding artiste, cover design, music video and sound engineering.
   The organisers also said the listeners could also participate in the selection by sending SMS in four categories - band music, modern song, motion picture sound track and budding artistes.
   The selection of the music award is divided into three phases - primary selection, secondary
   selection and the final selection.
   Music albums production houses are requested to submit their music albums released in 2008. The organisers will receive the music albums from November 18 to December 5 at Channel i’s Tejgaon office. Individuals will also be allowed to submit their albums in person.


Sixty years of writing career
of Kabir Chy celebrated

Participants in a discussion meeting on Monday mentioned Kabir Chowdhury as the voice of secular democracy.
   The Bangladesh Writers Foundation organised the programme at the Central Public Library in Dhaka
   to celebrate the sixty
   years of writings of the national professor Kabir Chowdhury.
   Besides Kabir Chowdhury, International Theatre Institute president Ramendu Majumdar and Dhaka University teacher and poet Mohammad Samad, among others, took part in the discussions, chaired by Professor Rafiqul Islam.
   In the programme, Kabir Chowdhury, also chief of the proposed national educational policy, said there was nothing to be worried about religion-based education as people can take this education from their family.
   Ramendu Majumdar said Kabir Chowdhury in his sixty years of writing carrier always wrote against religious fanaticism and fundamental activities.
   Rafiqul Islam described the life and works of Kabir Chowdhury and said during the liberation war Chowdhury was the director general of the Bangla Academy. The then Pakistani army tried to sign a memorandum against Bangladeshi culture but Kabir Chowdhury did not sign it.
   Terming Kabir Chowdhury the most modern, young and imaginative man of his time, Islam wished him a long life.


Classical dance performed
at Chhayanaut

A dance programme of Manipuri, Odissi, Bharatanatyam and Kathak was held at the auditorium of Chhayanaut Monday evening.
   The programme was organised by the Bangladesh centre of World Dance Alliance as the organisation would sent a dance troupe to participate in the international dance conference on November 28 in India.
   In the programme, Sharmila Banerjee and Tamanna Rahman presented Manipuri dance pieces while Marjana Munmun presented Odissi dance.
   Belayet Hossain Khan and Anisul Islam Hero performed the Bharatanatyam and Munmun Ahmed and Tabassum Ahmed performed Kathak.
   Chairperson, Interim committee of Bangladesh centre of World Dance Alliance, Lubna Marium informed media that all these dance pieces were organised to delight the dance lovers of the country.
   She also hoped that the dance artistes would delight the audience of India by putting up their respective performances in the upcoming Delhi dance conference.
   The dance programme was inaugurated by Dr Noazesh Ahmed.


Workshop on leadership
building held

A workshop titled ‘Leadership for the 21st Century’ jointly organised by Bangladesh Youth Leadership Centre and Dhaka University Management Club was held at the Faculty of Business Studies of Dhaka University on Thursday.
   BYLC president Ejaj Ahmad conducted the four-hour session while the project manager Ifdad Ahmed was, among others, present at the workshop.
   The workshop featured the purpose and prospect of leadership and introduced diagnostic framework and strategies for effective leadership in the country.
   The speakers discussed the current leadership and gave a critical evaluation of the corporate jobs.
   The speakers also discussed how a business student can get to know about leadership and management to meet the leadership crisis.
   Around 70 students of different universities participated at the workshop.
