Villagers construct dam on their own at Bauphal
Our correspondent . Patuakhali
RESIDENTS of four villages in Kalisuri union under Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali have set an example by constructing a dam-cum-road on a canal on their own. Remote South-Chitka, Patilapara, Arainao and Singherakathi villages, populated by about 6,000 people, had so long been detached by the canal. Residents of the four villagers, particularly students, had long been facing problems in communicating with the other parts of the upazila. Villagers said that they had been making an appeal to the government to construct a dam on the canal to remove their woes. But, to their sorrow, no one paid any heed to their demand in the last two decades. At last, they themselves took initiative to construct a dam-cum-road on the canal. They formed a village development committee comprising both men and women. Two non-government organisations based in the district also came forward to help their efforts. The villages started construction work of the 300 feet long dam on May 12. Women also took part in the work spontaneously. Half of the work has so far been completed. The dam is expected to be completed by this month, sources said. Upon completion of the construction work, a huge water body will be created on both sides of the dam for fish cultivation, said Md. Shahabuddin Khan, president of the village development committee.
