The Reading Circle, a group of enthusiastic readers of literature held its 40th session on June 15, Monday at Bay’s Galleria, Red Shift, in the city’s Gulshan area. ‘Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance’, a memoir by President of the United States Barack Obama was the book of this month for discussion. The speakers talked about the book and shared their feelings about it at the meet. ‘Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance’ the first book of Obama was published in 1995 after he was elected the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, before his political career began. He was made advance payment by the publisher ‘Three Rivers Press’ to write his autobiography after being elected the president of the Harvard Law Review. The speakers not only discussed on the book but also on the diversity of the writer’s life, his political career, and even on his recent Cairo speech. All the participants said that it is a book of searching for one’s identity and it is a common crisis of coloured people in the USA like Obama. In the novel Obama has tried to depict it. They praised the book for its literary merit and the writer’s literary talent as well. Prof. Niaz Zaman, Farida Shaikh, and some others spoke on Obama’s recent much-talked-about Cairo speech and his political activities. Dr M S A Haq said that he studied law at Harvard University and the same teacher who taught Obama also taught him. Farida quoted from Obama’s speech. Ali Ahmed commented that if Obama could not be the president there’s no doubt he would be a good writer. The total number of participants was 15. TRC meets every month, usually on the third Monday of a month. TRC is a very informal group. They ignore designations and positions, they count persons and value.
