Turkey’s Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu becomes secretary general
Dhaka has expressed its utter disappointment at its debacle in the just-held election to the secretary-general’s post of the Organisation of Islamic Conference.
All hopes of the Bangladesh candidate Salauddin Quader Chowdhury were dashed when Turkey’s Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu came out successful in Tuesday’s OIC ballot in Istanbul with a margin, Dhaka thought, that could be counted on its eight fingers, or at its worst on six.
The Foreign Office, always on the high road, was happily counting 30 birds in the hand, ultimately ending up with 18 in the bush and having a dozen in the end.
“We are disappointed at the result,” Reaz Rahman, advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said when journalists wanted to know the government’s reaction.
Dhaka lobbied with gusto for over a year, leaving no stone unturned and very few capitals unvisited.
Reaz, however, declined to point any finger at any reason behind the failure. An amount of around Tk 20 crore was spent on the campaign.
New Age June 12, 2007 Rain-triggered landslides kill 86
Early monsoon downpour wreaks havoc on Chittagong, air traffic, port activities suspended
A string of landslides triggered by torrential rains buried hillside localities leaving at least 86 people, including two policemen, dead and 100 others injured in the port city and its surroundings on Monday, administration officials said.
Army rescue teams searched for bodies and survivors all day as scores of people are believed to have been trapped in their hillside thatched and mud houses near Chittagong cantonment, the divisional commissioner of Chittagong, Mokhlesur Rahman said.
‘The death toll may rise further as rescue operation is continuing’, he said.
Intermittent rains, however, forced suspension of the rescue operation in the evening.
Unconfirmed sources put the death toll at 90.

Govt releases Hasina for eight weeks
The military-controlled government on Wednesday released former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, from jail for eight weeks allowing her to take medical treatment abroad apparently after striking a political deal with her party.
‘In line with the recommendations of a medical board [formed earlier] the government has freed the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, now detained in a sub-jail at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, for eight weeks from June 11, 2008 as per the authorities given under section 401 (4A) of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898,’ said an official circular issued on Wednesday, 11 months after her arrest.
The government formed the five-member medical board for ailing Hasina on June 5 in response to a request from her husband Wazed Mia in March this year.
Sheikh Hasina was arrested by army-led joint forces at her private Sudha Sadan residence on July 16 on charge of extortion. She is now facing trials in five cases, in which she would not need to appear personally on medical ground.
