After buying the fishes from traders, consumers go to the centre for testing them free of cost. If any traders sell fish mixed with formalin and it tested positive, the particular species of fish are sent back to the wholesalers, he said. If any fish is contaminated with formalin, the committee will take punitive measures against the traders concerned, he said. The ministries of home affairs and fisheries and livestock, export promotion bureau and Dhaka City Corporation in association with Hope 87 set up the centre to ensure selling of formalin-free fish. The government will carry out a survey in this regard two months later. If accepted by all, the government will set up more centres at different city markets, said Tapan. Physicians, however, warned that formalin-mixed fish is harmful to health.
