Our Correspondents . Jhenaidah and Narail
Prices of vegetables have registered a sharp rise in Jhenaidah causing concern among the commoners. Prices of different kinds of winter vegetables have gone up in the district in the last one week to the sufferings of the common people. Short supply of vegetables is mainly responsible for the situation, said the vegetable traders. Visiting different markets on Friday, this correspondent found that potato was sold at Tk 22 to 23 per kilogram as against Tk 16, aubergine at Tk 24 as against Tk 12, beans at Tk 20 as against Tk 8, cauliflower at Tk 20 as against Tk 10, cabbage at Tk 14 as against Tk 8, reddish at Tk 12 as against Tk 5, tomato at Tk 40 as against Tk 18, sweet pumpkin at Tk 20 as against Tk 12 and spinach at Tk 24 as against Tk 12. Pumpkins were selling at between Tk 20 and Tk 30 depending on sizes as against TK 12 to 15. Onion was selling for Tk 40 per kg as against Tk 24. Jhantu Miah, 42, and Ananda Mandal, 45, at Sailkupa vegetable market, said that supply of winter vegetables was inadequate in the market for the last one and a half weeks. Vegetable growers of the area are bringing least quantity of their produces in the markets. Farmers Abdul Hamid, 39, of village Kalikapur, and Doyal Chandra, 43, of village Hamdah in sadar upazila, said that production of winter vegetables was not satisfactory in the current season due to abnormal price hike of chemical fertilisers and their short supply. Even the well to do farmers could not apply adequate quantity of fertiliser in their fields. Beside s, there has been no rainfall in the last couple of months in the area that has reduced yield of winter vegetables. The deputy director of the Department Of Agricultural Extension, Jhenaidah, Abdul Kader Sarker, echoing the speeches of the vendors and farmers said they could not meet the demand of the vegetables due to their inadequate supply and market manipulation by a few fertiliser traders. The recent cut in fertiliser prices by the government will encourage the farmers to produce more vegetables as there is enough time to control the market in the current season, the DAE deputy director said.
