Leading to victory
FOR 150 million people of Bangladesh, it is indeed a great day today as, on this day 38 years ago, our freedom fighters freed Bangladesh from the clutches of the occupation forces of Pakistan that forcibly wanted to suppress our cultural identity, our democratic aspiration for rule of law, economic equality among citizens, social justice, etc... The dynamics of leadership
Heraclitus observed that ‘No one steps twice into the same river’; and twenty-five centuries later thinkers are still rediscovering the inescapable reality of change. Life and the world keep flowing and evolving. Surely by now we grasp that truth. But we are of two minds as to whether we like it. There is something in us that fiercely resists change. And there is something else in us that welcomes it, finds it bracing, even seeks it out. It’s the latter that keeps species going... [ + ]
The politics of leadership
SOME are born leaders; some assume leadership and on some leadership is thrust. Many philosophers have also taken upon themselves to point out that this aspect is determined by circumstances. Aristotle, Ptolemy the First and Confucius shared this view. Others have claimed that leadership is the conclusion that eventually arrives – after the completion of a process... [ + ]
People fear leaders without popular base
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? I do not think that the country is suffering from lack of leadership. A strong democratic party is now in power with people’s mandate, while a strong democratic party is in opposition... [ + ]
Reclaiming leadership part of people’s struggle
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from the lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? Leadership is not independent of class, ideology and social relations. Leadership grows from the people, represents people’s consciousness. False consciousness creates wrong leadership. Ideological hegemony of the undemocratic forces place enemies as leaders. Weakness to build up counter hegemony keeps false consciousness as the driving force... [ + ]
Lack of leadership a result of Jan 11 changeover
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state? Do you subscribe to the view? After the war of independence, the people reposed their faith in Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The war-ravaged country then needed dynamic leadership. Regrettably, the government led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman failed to deliver... [ + ]
A leader symbolises a policy
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? A leader symbolises a policy. The question is on what policies and ideals and under what kind of struggle the leadership is growing up. Any impact of the leadership on the state and society depends on its process of growing up. When the bourgeoisie of Bangladesh was struggling for independence, in a relative meaning, they had a spirit of struggle based on patriotism.... [ + ]
Stewardship of health system: challenges and constraints
ON THE occasion of our thirty-eighth victory day, it is perhaps appropriate to look at what we have achieved so far in improving our standard of living. Health being one of the fundamental human capabilities essential to enjoy life and recognised as a basic human right, it would be nice to assess our progress in health.... [ + ]
Our leaders need to take lessons from past
Many believe that Bangladesh is suffering from the lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the idea? People generally use the word ‘leadership’ to mean one person, one individual. The concept of collective leadership is usually absent from our thoughts when we talk about leadership or leaders.... Leadership not about person but institution
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? Leadership is not about a person but an institution, to lead the struggle for implementation of political ideals and programmes. There is a lack of such leadership now.... [ + ]
Good leaders evolve through movements
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? Leadership is required at family, organisation, institution and state levels and the leaderships are there. I will not say there is a crisis of leadership. But, we can discuss whether there is the leadership required to achieve a particular goal.... [ + ]
Political plurality need not entail polarised society
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? I have a similar belief. The democratic transformation of society has been hindered. Proper training on leadership or inheritance of ideologies is almost absent. The existing process is imposed by party hierarchy and not delegated adequately... [ + ]
Bangladesh lacks resources for democracy to thrive
Many believe Bangladesh is suffering from lack of leadership, at every level, to ensure democratic transformation of society and the state. Do you subscribe to the view? No. We have leadership. In fact, we have too many leaders at every step. What we lack is a leader who is willing to transform society... [ + ]
Crisis in global leadership in the sphere of geopolitics
IT IS not only failed and near-failed states, and the Great Financial Crisis that are threatening the present world system. The climate crisis covers the entire globe. The Great Food Crisis with its sisters – crises in agriculture and environment – are no less Satan. The energy crisis casts its eyes not only on the machines of capital but also on billions of poor. The crisis in democracy now is not only a Third and Fourth World phenomenon. It has surfaced in the First and Second Worlds also.... [ + ]
