DEFIANCE OF WARNING
Netting of spawning fish
on in Madaripur

Our Correspondent . Madaripur

Catching of different kinds of spawning fish and fry goes on unabated in the water bodies of the district in defiance of the Prime Minister’s warning against causing harm to fish resources even during the Fisheries Week.
As the Padma and other rivers and canals remain filled with water these spawning fishes come to these water bodies to lay eggs in the rainy season.
A lot of enclosures made of net, bamboos and sacks have been erected in the water bodies in Shibchar and Rajoir upazilas.
The unscrupulous fishermen are catching mother fishes and fry indiscriminately for the last one and a half months.
According to the district fisheries office, during June-July period, different kinds of fishes come to the water bodies for spawning.
During a recent visit, local people informed this correspondent that indiscriminate netting of fishes and fry goes unhindered at Kathalbari, Magurkhanda, Charjanajat, Mirali Sarderkandi, Baraikandi, Chandbeparikandi, Madborerchar, Bandar-khola, Padma river point near Kawrakandi ferry ghat, Sipaikandi waterlogged area, Sirueail, Moinakata canal, Arial Khan river at Utrail, Shekhpur Bill Padma, Vandarikandi Bill Padma under Shibchar upazila and river of Palardhi, Arial Khan under Kalkini upazila of Madaripur district. On the other hand, fishes are
also being caught by setting traps in the water
   bodies beside shrimp enclosures.
Md Monirul Mamun, fishery officer, Shibchar told this correspondent that they needed
fund allocation for removing the structures. ‘We need about Tk 2 lakh for the purpose,’ he said.
‘We wrote frequently to the higher authorities but they didn’t allocate any fund for this purpose,’ he added.
Plundering of fishes by the callous fishermen will cause the country’s fishery sector an estimated Tk 2 crore loss this season, sources said.
While talking to this correspondent, Dr AKM Aminul Islam, district fishery officer, said, ‘This practice is fully illegal but we can’t go into action against the fishermen as they are backed by some influential people.’
‘We are also helpless because we have no budget to remove these illegal structures,’ he added.
