Jhenaidah Child Hospital yet
to start functioning

The Jhenaidah Child Hospital is yet to start functioning as no medical staff including physicians and nurses have been appointed even after two years of its inauguration.
   The ministry of health constructed the hospital near the district bus terminal on Jhenaidah-Magura Highway at a cost of around Tk 6.34 crore, according to hospital sources.
   The construction work of the hospital was completed in 2006 and the former prime minister Khaleda Zia inaugurated it on September 6 of the same year, the sources said.
   Some patients of the district general hospital had been shifted to the child hospital on the day of its inauguration, some locals said.
   Besides, a few physicians, nurses and other staff had
   been placed at the hospital on the day as per directive of
   former lawmaker Mashiur Rahman.
   Even no medicine and equipment was provided to the hospital to start its operation, the locals said.
   At the initial stage, a physician from the general hospital was given the charge to see out-door patients at the child hospital, they said.
   But after a couple of
   weeks, the hospital authorities stopped treatment for out-door patients.
   The health secretary visited the hospital last year and assured the local people that all necessary steps had been taken immediately start operation of the hospital.
   The district civil surgeon, Dr Niranjan Kumar Sikder, told New Age that they had supplied some medical equipment to the child hospital.
   ‘We have sent a proposal to the health ministry to appoint 57 medical staff including 10 doctors,’ he added.
   He also said Tk 10 lakh was allocated for purchasing medicine for the hospital but the money went back due to lack of approval by the authorities concerned.
   During a visit, our correspondent found that hospital
   ground is being used for crop cultivation.


Road mishaps kill four
in three dists

Four persons were killed and 12 others injured in separate road accidents in Pabna Lalmonirhat and Narail on Friday and Saturday according to our district correspondents.
   In Pabna, one person was killed and 12 others injured on the Dhaka-Pabna Highway at Chinakhara in Sujanagar upazila on Saturday.
   The deceased is Samsur Rahman, 32.
   Locals said a Dhaka-bound bus from Ishwardi fell into a roadside ditch at Chinakhara under Sujanagar upazila leaving Samsur dead on the spot and 12 others injured.
   Four of the injured were admitted to a local hospital.
   The police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
   In Lalmonirhat, a young man was killed when his bicycle was hit by a truck on the Velabari- Durgapur road at Kalirhat the same day.
   The deceased is Monirul Islam.
   Locals said a Lalmonirhat-bound truck knocked down Monirul while he was crossing the road. He died on the spot.
   In Narail, two persons were killed in separate road accidents at the district sadar upazila on Friday. A 6-year-old girl died on the spot after a bus ran over her on the Narail-Jessore Highway at village Sitarampur of sadar upazila.
   She was the daughter of Torab Ali of the village.
   A motorcyclist was killed in another road accident on the same road in the Karimpur bus stand.
   The deceased is Firoz Biswas, 23. He was a student of 2nd year honours at Economics Department of Narail Government Victoria College.
   Local people said Firoz died on the spot after a head-on collision between his vehicle and a truck.


Minor boy found dead in Lalmonirhat

A minor boy was found dead in a pond at village Haldibari under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila on Saturday.
   The deceased was identified as Hasan, 5, son of one Hamidul Islam of the village.
   Local people found the body floating in the pond and informed the police of the
   matter.
   The police recovered the body and sent it to the Lalmonirhat General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
   The victim’s family said Hasan had gone missing from the house since morning of
   the day.


Four children drown in
Cox’s Bazar

Four children drowned in the River Bakkhali in two separate incidents at Ramu upazila
   in Cox’s Bazar Saturday afternoon.
   The deceased are Khokan, 7, Class-I student of Lambori Para Government Primary School, Parvej, 10, Class-III student of the same school, Sadiya Moni, 3, daughter of one Mohammad Selim and Momena Akter, 3, daughter of one Abdul Bari of Naikhangchhari upazila.
   The police quoting the locals said four children – Khokan, Parvej, Shahin and Amir Hamza were taking bath in the river at Rajarkhool at about 12:00pm.
   At one stage, they went missing. Shahin and Hamza were rescued after a frantic search. They were admitted to the Ramu Upazila Health Complex.
   Later, the bodies of Khokan and Parvej were recovered two kilometres away from the bank of the river.
   In another incident, two more children drowned in the same river at Garjoniha the same day.
   Local sources said Sadiya and Momena suddenly went missing while they were playing on their house compound in the afternoon.
   Later, their bodies were recovered from the river.


Robbers kill man, loot valuables
of Tk 2 lakh

Robbers killed a man and looted valuables worth about Tk 2 lakh from his house at Pagla under Fatullah upazila in Narayanganj on Saturday.
   The deceased was identified as Sayed Sirazul Islam, 65. He was the assistant manager of Jiban Bima Corporation.
   Local people said a gang of robbers entered the house of Sirazul breaking open the collapsible gate.
   The gang hit Sirajul with an iron rod as he tried to resist them.
   Later, they took away
   valuables including cash,
   gold ornaments and mobile phone set worth about Tk 2 lakh and fled the scene with the booties.
   Hearing screams of the victim’s wife, local people rescued Sirazul in a critical condition and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared him
   dead.
   A case was filed with the local police station. Officials of the Rapid Action Battalion visited the spot.


25 injured as rivals clash
in Shariatpur

United News of Bangladesh . Shariatpur

At least 25 people were injured in a clash at village Chargajipur at Shariatpur sadar upazila Saturday afternoon.
   Local people said there was a long standing dispute between local UP member Gani Matbar and Akkas Matbar over establishing supremacy in the village.
   They said an altercation ensued between the supporters of the two rival groups when Gani Matbar hurled abusive words at a supporter of Akkas Matbar for refusing to sell cigarette to him.
   Later, both the groups equipped with lethal weapons and sticks attacked each other, leaving at least 25 injured.


Four held with heroin
United News of Bangladesh . Naogaon

Four persons, including a police constable, were arrested along with heroin worth Tk 50 lakh near Raninagar upazila parishad building on Saturday.
   On tip-off, the police arrested Masud Rana, 21, Abdus Salam, 48, and police constable of Patnitola thana Helaluddin Munshi along with 500 grams of heroin at 3:00pm.
   Later, on the basis of Helaluddin’s confessional statement, the police arrested Zobaidul alias Roni, 30, from Santahar area.


Prisoner dies in N’ganj jail

A convicted prisoner of Narayanganj jail died of respiratory complications on Saturday.
   The deceased was identified as identified as Raza Mia, 38, son of one Azahar Mia of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur.
   The civil surgeon of Narayanganj, Dr Atiqul Sarwar, said Raza had been suffering from as asthma for long.
   Raza was admitted to Narayanganj General Hospital in a critical condition on Saturday but he died son after admission to the hospital, he said.
   He was convicted in a murder case and has been suffering jail term since 1999, Dr Sarwar added.


Woman killed after rape
in Mymensingh

A woman was killed after gang-rape at village Chang Palashia under Phulpur upazila in Mymensingh Friday night.
   The deceased is Sadeja, 28, wife of one Jalal Uddin, an expatriate in Saudi Arabia.
   The police said a gang of criminals had called Sadeja out of her house on the night and took her to a nearby jungle and raped her there.
   Later, they killed her and left the body in the jungle.
   On information, the police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
