Six receive Amalendu award

The Amalendu Biswas Kalyan Trust on Friday honoured six personalities with the Amalendu Biswas Padak for contributions to their respective fields. The recipients were national Professor Kabir Chowdhury, Poet Shamsur Rahman (posthumous), theatre personality Tapas Sarkar, Jatra researcher Tapon Bagchi, journalist Rafiquzzaman and jatra artist Shabari Das Gupta (posthumous). The awards were handed over to the recipients at a ceremony at the Experimental Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Dhaka. Journalist Kamal Lohani, Group Theatre Federation chairman M Hamid, theatre activists Mamunur Rashid and Mannan Heera and recitation artiste Shafi Kamal attended the programme with Jyotsna Biswas in the chair. The speakers recalled the contributions of Amalendu Biswas who had enriched the traditional medium by playing a significant role. Michael Madushudan, Lenin, Hitlar and Janwar are some of his plays that portray his creative and artistic work, said the speakers. Amalendu was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1989 for his contribution to the field of jatra. The organisation introduced the award in 2003. Ramendu Majumdar, SM Mohsin and Sultan Selim received the award in that year while Kamal Lohani, Nazmul Alam and Habib Sarwar in 2004, late Selim Al-Deen, Mamunur Rashid and Rikta Sultana received the award in 2005. M Hamid, Nasir Uddin Yousuff, late Asir Uddin Ahmed and Arshad Ali (posthumous) received the award in 2006. In 2007, the organisation honoured four personalities –– Mafidul Hoque, Golam Sarwar, Liaquat Ali Lucky and Nani Chakrabarty (posthumous) with the award.
