Seven contestants receive award

Cultural Correspondent

A week-long show featuring award-winning cartoons on corruption began at Drik Gallery in Dhaka on Friday.
The Anti-Corruption Commission chairman, Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury, inaugurated the 3rd show titled ‘Cartoon against corruption’.
The Transparency International Bangladesh organised the show marking International Anti-Corruption Day, which falls on December 9.
‘Corruption should be stopped. I thank the younger generation for coming forward to raise voices against corruption’, said the ACC chairman.
The cartoonists portray the scenes of corruption through their works, he said, adding that different organisations had been working to create awareness among the people.
Noted artist Mustafa Monwar also attended the inaugural ceremony as special guest with former adviser to the interim government Sultana Kamal in the chair.
‘The corrupt people do not like cartoonists as they portray the real story through their works’, said Monwar.
Criticising political leaders and corrupt people, he said, ‘In civilised countries, the political leaders want cartoons on their work as it helps them get corrected.’
The organisers will also arrange a two-day cultural programme, beginning on December 4, at Dhanmondi Rabindra Sarobar to inspire the young generation to say no to corruption.
TIB earlier invited entries from the cartoonists for the competition. A total of 421 cartoonists, in two groups, submitted 791 works for the competition.
Of them, 59 cartoons, which received awards in three categories, including the special mention award, are on display in the show that will remain open to all from 3:00pm to 8:00pm till December 4, said the organisers.
Soma Surabhi Zannat received the best award in Ka category. She received a crest, certificate and Tk 15,000.
SN Sadique and Asim Chandra Roy received the first and second runner-up award with crests, certificates and Tk 12,000 and 10,000 respectively.
In category Kha, ASM Shahidullah Faruque won the best award while New Age cartoonist Mehedi Haque received the first runner-up award.
Kamrul Hasan and Raisul Islam jointly won the second runner-up award. They also received crest, certificates and money.
