Interactive meeting of writers, academics, readers held

An interactive meeting of writers, academics and readers was held at the Café C Square at Plaza AR, Dhanmondi, Dhaka, initiated by the Somoy Prokashoni on Friday. Writers, academics and readers at the meeting stressed the need of uni-track educational system to promote country’s diversified culture and national spirit. English and madrasah medium education system are the examples of inconsistencies in question of our national spirit, they said. They also observed that people were in great difficulties in the madness of price hike of everyday essentials. They also felt the need of freeing from country’s service sectors like education and medi-care from open market competition. They also suggested for unnecessary use of English on different occasions in media and social level. Among the guest writers who spoke on the occasion included Ayesha Faiz, who is also the mother of three popular writers Humayun Ahmed, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and Ahsan Habib, Selina Hossain, Selina Hossain, Muhammad Zafar Iqbal along with his wife Yasmin Huq, also professor at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet and Farid Ahmed of Somoy Prokashoni. Ayesha Faiz wrote only one title to her credit and that was her own autobiography titled Jibon Je Rokom, published in February 2008. The book has been wide acclaimed and the seventh edition of it is now in market. She said, ‘It is my first and last book. I have no ability to write any book more because of my old age complications’. ‘I had no fascination to write a book, but I wrote my autobiography in 1991. Then I was in the USA with my son. My son, daughter-in-law and their children inspired me to write my autobiography and I did.’ Ayesha lost her freedom fighter husband Faizur Rahman in 1971. After that she had to struggle a lot along with her six children. He has featured all the important happenings in her life in this book. The 112-page book contains 50 chapters. The book published by Somoy Prokashoni is priced at Tk 125. Dhruba Esh has designed the cover of the book. Selina Hossain said, ‘Country’s primary education should totally be handled by women. It can help in building an enlightened generation.’ Zafar Iqbal said, ‘Private university system should be reformed and make access to lower middle class income groups.’ Yasmin Haq stressed the need of social reforms for eliminating inconsistencies in education like English medium education. Somoy Prokshoni organises such interactive meeting on every second and fourth Fridays of each month.
Weeklong Maxim Gorky festival begins today

Theatre and music department of Dhaka University will arrange a weeklong theatre festival staging Maxim Gorky’s The Lower Depths at the auditorium of the university’s Natmandal from today. Everyday the show will begin at 7:00pm. The play, translated by the noted filmmaker Tanvir Mokammel, and directed by Sudip Chakroborthy, the play is based on the people of the working class. Students of the department will perform different roles in the play. According to the organisers, the play will be staged for the first time in the country. It is a part of the academic exercise of the 4th year honours students of the department. They aim to highlight the significance of the historic May Day and to express their solidarity to the poor and common people of the country by presenting this play. They hope that the Bengali version of the play will uphold the rights of the underprivileged and struggling people of the country without hampering the spirit of the classic.
