People suffer power supply disruption
Our Correspondent . Barisal

Rampant theft of transformers is seriously hampering electricity supply in different upazilas of Barisal, causing immense sufferings of the people.
The people, particularly in rural areas, are badly affected by power supply disruption due to frequent stealing of transformers, some subscribers said.
They also alleged that a section of employees of the Rural Electrification Board are involved in stealing of transformers.
According to REB sources, some 304 transformers having the capacities of 5 KV, 10 KV, 15 KV and 25 KV have been stolen in the last 16 months, causing a loss of over Tk I crore.
Of them, 68 transformers have been stolen in sadar upazila, 30 in Babuganj, 16 in Banaripara, 37 in Uzirpur, five in Gournadi, eight in Agoiljhara, 55 in Bakerganj, 19 in Hizla, 25 in Muladi and 41 in Mehendiganj upazilas. The number of incidents of transformers’ theft has been on the rise in the region for last two years as the REB office receives report of
theft almost everyday, REB sources said.
‘Most of the theft incidents were detected during checks we made after receiving complaint of power supply disruption from subscribers,’ a REB official said.
As per a contract, subscribers and the REB authorities have to share fifty-fifty of the total cost of purchase and replacement of a stolen transformer, REB sources said.
‘Until the amount is collected from the subscribers, the REB does not take any initiative to restore electricity supply in the affected areas,’ he added.
‘Most of the subscribers cannot afford to share the cost of replacement of stolen transformers.’
As a result, they have to remain without power in their areas for months, local sources said.
When contacted, the general manager of Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS)-1, Engineer Abdul Mannan, denied any allegation of REB men’s involvement in transformers stealing.
He said thieves could easily disconnect power supply lines by cutting wire and removing coil of transformer.
Mannan also said they had caught red-handed a good many thieves and handed over them to the police but none of the arrested confessed involvement of any REB employees in this connection.
About sharing the cost of replacement of stolen transformers, he said the REB is operating PBSs under cooperative, profit and loss system and so both sides have to share the loss of property as share holders.
