Water crisis turns acute in
Dakope upazila in Khulna

Tapos Kanti Das . Khulna

People in almost all the villages under Dakope upazila in Khulna are suffering acute crisis of drinking water in the current summer.
Water of all the tube wells excepting a few in the upazila are not safe for drinking as it is contaminated with arsenic and contains high salinity, local people said.
Besides, most of the pond sand filters (PSF) installed by the Department of Public Health Engineering remain inoperative, worsening the situation, they said.
There are a total of 309 PSFs in different villages under the upazila and more than 100 of them has remained out of order for long, according to DPHE sources.
Sangeeta Shil, a Class-VIII student at Kalinagar GC Memorial High School under Kamarkhola union, said she comes to the school with a pot everyday to collect water from the PSF near the school and carry it home after school hours.
‘My mother walks to the PSF every afternoon with a pitcher from village Kamarkhola, around three kilometers away from my school, to collect water, Sangeeta, said.
Mukti Biswas, of village Kalinagar and a classmate of Sangeeta, also comes to the school with a pot to bring home water from the PSF.
‘My house is about one kilometre away from the school
and it is difficult for my mother to carry water from here. So
I try to help my mother,’ she said.
Most of the girl-students and also a good many boy-students carry water for their family, Mukti added.
The headmaster of the school, Amarendra Roy, told New Age that all the students come to the school from distant places and they carry home water from the PSF at the end of school hours.
‘Crisis of drinking water has turned acute in the area as people have no other sources excepting PSFs to collect water,’ he said.
The Kamarkhola union parishad chairman, Samoresh Chandra Roy, said only four PSFs are now operative in his union comprising ten villages.
People come to the PSFs to collect drinking water from different villages by walking three to four kilometers.
‘Schoolchildren, especially girl students, of the union are helping their family by collecting water from PSFs, the chairman added.
‘There are 1,138 tube-wells in the upazila but all of them, excepting only one at the upazila headquarters are contaminated with arsenic and it contains high salinity, said Dakope
upazila nirbahi officer, Md Mohsin Ali.
When contacted, the DPHE superintendent engineer for Khulna division, Kamal Uddin Ahmed, said they would soon repair 40 PSFs and the remaining ones will be repaired by a local non-governmental organisation.
‘We will also install 30 new PSFs in different villages under the upazila to ease the severe water crisis facing the people,’ he added.

Prices of diesel, kerosene
up in Barisal

Our Correspondent . Barisal

The prices of diesel and kerosene have registered a sudden increase in Barisal over the couple of days reportedly due to artificial supply shortage created by a section of traders.
Local said diesel and kerosene prices had increased in the city by Tk 7.00 to 10.00 per litre.
Oil depot sources said they had supplied kerosene at Tk 7, 842 per barrel and diesel at Tk 7, 762 per barrel to the dealers. The dealers have been directed to sell those at Tk 8,000 per barrel in the wholesale markets.
However, the retailers alleged that the dealers were taking Tk 8,500 per barrel of kerosene and diesel.
‘They also did no give any cash memo against the purchase’, a retailer said.
Currently, retail customers have to pay Tk 48 for per litre kerosene and Tk 46 for per litre diesel against the government fixed highest price of Tk 39.21 for kerosene and Tk 38.81 for diesel  in Barisal market.
Fuel dealers like Khan Stores of Faria Patty, Sikdar Traders of Katpatty, Luna Enterprise of Band Road said they had to collect fuel from the depot by giving extra money as stock at the depot was insufficient to meet the demand of the local markets.
The depot has supplied only two barrels against the demand for ten barrels to me and this created crisis in the market, said a dealer.
Officials at the Jamuna Oil depot in Barisal denied taking taking any extra charge from the dealers.
‘We have sufficient stock and supply to the dealers was limited by their quotas’, an official said.
He blamed hoarding by the dealers for the increase in the fuel prices and said the market-monitoring committee of the administration could take action against against the persons involved in hoarding.
