Photo show begins today

A 15-day photography exhibition titled Doors & Windows by Torsten Oertel will begin at today at the Goethe-Institut in Dhaka. The photos at the show will include different outlook and dimensions of doors and windows all around us. On some levels it is through the doors and the windows that we maintain our connection to the worlds…. the inside and the outside. However significant this phenomenon is, it is usually taken as a matter-of-fact issue – that one doesn’t really pay attention to it on a day-to-day life. It is different Trsten’s case. Torsten, who is also the director of Goethe-Institut has closely observed the facts and snapped the beauties and various dimensions in doors and windows. And on some levels it is through the doors or the windows one gets the message of ‘welcome’ or ‘off limits’ – may it be a temporary or a permanent signal! A unique collection of colour photographs that makes you wonder what lies behind and takes you through and in n’ out of different worlds. The show will remain open from 10:00m to 8:00 every day till May 29 except Fridays and Saturdays.
Stars gear up for Cannes fest
Agence France-Presse . Cannes
Kicking kung-fu pandas and a chilling Brazilian drama evoking the apocalypse: the Cannes film festival kicks off Wednesday with its usual mix of philosophy and fun, not to mention glitz. Opening night red-carpet glory this year is for Brazil’s two-time Oscar-nominated director Fernando Meirelles, whose ‘Blindness’, about a world where people have lost their sight, starts the world’s biggest filmfest. The film, starring Julianne Moore, is one of 22 competing for Cannes’ prestigious Palme d’Or, this year to be awarded by a jury headed by Sean Penn and handed out by Robert de Niro. Based on a book by Nobel winner Jose Saramago of Portugal, the latest movie by the maker of ‘City of God’ and ‘The Constant Gardener’, is a gripping story about humanity facing an epidemic of blindness that raises a heap of questions about human nature and the fragility of society.
