Lalmonirhat village cops pass hard days
Get only Tk 1,400 as monthly salary

S Dilip Roy . Lalmonirhat

The village police in Lalmonirhat are passing hard days getting only Tk 1,400 as monthly salary when the prices of essential commodities are too high.
There are 410 village cops at 42 unions of five upazilas in the district. Most of them are now living with their families in great hardship. Sometimes they have to starve as they cannot manage food with the poor income.
Jogendra Nath Barman, a senior village cop of Daikhowa union under Hatibandha upazila serving in the job for the last 20 years, said in the past, his four-member family had never experienced such a situation.
‘Somehow we could manage our needs with the income. But now my wife has to go out to search for jobs here and there almost everyday,’ said a gloomy Jogendra.
‘The prices of essential commodities have increased many times over the last few years but our salary has not.’
He said the soaring food prices ate up almost entire part of his income. ‘We cannot buy sufficient food, let alone other essential items,’ he said.
Another village cop Aimuddin, 40, of Harati union under sadar upazila, said he was now leading a very miserable life with this wife and two school-going children.
‘I don’t have any other source of income. So how could I maintain the family with only Tk 1,400 per month when one kilogram of rice costs over Tk 30?’ he questioned.
Like Jogendra and Aminul many other village cops narrated the same story.
On the other hand, Bosir Uddin, a retired village cop at Chandrapur union under Kaliganj upazila, said, ‘I retired from my job in February after serving in the job for 37 years. But I did not get even 37 paisa from the government, retiring after 37 years.’
He underscored the need for introducing pension opportunities for the village cops after retirement.
The president of the Lalmonirhat District Village Police Association said the government should increase the salary of the village cops and introduce pension scheme to help them after retirement.
The village police play an important role in maintaining law and order in the villages and acknowledging the fact the authorities concerned should solve their problems, he observed.
