Maize attracts farmers
for more profit

Land brought under farming
this year triple than target

THE farmers in Jhenaidah have taken to maize cultivation on large scale in as it yields more profit with less cost.
   Farmers said they had brought more than triple land under maize cultivation this year than in the previous years.
   According to the Department of Agricultural Extension in Jhenaidah, farmers of the district have cultivated 17,696 hectares of land under the maize cultivation exceeding the target of 5,300 hectares of land. The production target was fixed at 30,896 tonnes when the expectation now stands triple of the target.
   According to the DAE, 2,775 hectares of land has been brought under maize cultivation as against targeted 1,300 hectares in sadar upazila, 285 hectares as against 55 hectares in Kaliganj upazila, 2,650 hectares as against 435 hectares in Kotchandpur upazila, 8,200 hectares as against 2,600 hectares in Moheshpur upazila, 230 hectares as against 50 hectares in Sailkupa upazila and 3,605 hectares as against 860 hectares in Harinakunda upazila.
   The farmer in the district had produced 37,183 tonnes of maize on 5,300 hectares last year.
   Taizal Mandal, 85, of village Saganna in sadar upazila said he had brought his 60 decimals of land under maize cultivation as against 40 decimals in the last year.
   Another farmer Belal Hossain, 30, of the same village said he had brought 60 decimals of land under maize farming this season as against 42 decimals last year.
   They said the production cost of maize cultivation was lower than the others crops.
   At least 150 farmers in the village have cultivated 210 hectares of land while the area of maize farming in the village was only 40 hectares in the last couple of years.
   There are many villages like Saganna where the farmers have cultivated maize on large scale this year.
   The blooming poultry farming has raised its demand substantially in the markets all over the country.
   Deputy director of the Jhenaidah DAE, Abdul Kader Sarkar, said 900M variety (hybrid) of maize was the most popular seed. A farmer can earn Tk 40,000 by cultivating one hectare of land where the production cost would not exceed Tk 8,000, he said.


Four killed in road accidents

AT LEAST four persons were killed in separate road accidents in Gazipur, Comilla and Sirajganj on Saturday and Friday night.
   In Gazipur, Arafat Hossain, 11, a Class III student of Rajendrapur Cantonment Board School and College, was crushed under the wheels of a Dhaka-bound bus when he was crossing the Dhaka–Kapasia Road in the Rajendrapur RP Gate area at about 11:00am.
   He was taken to Gazipur General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
   In another accident, a rickshaw puller was killed on the Rajendrapur Chowrasta area.
   The rickshaw puller, Shahidul, died on the spot
   and two others were injured after a collision between a truck and the rickshaw at about 11:30am.
   The police recovered both of the bodies and sent those to the Gazipur General Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
   Separate cases were filed with the Joydevpur police station.
   In Comilla, a man was killed when a motorcycle hit him on the Dhaka–Chittagong Highway in the Chauddagram area under Chauddagram upazila on Friday night.
   The deceased was Md Serajuddin, 60, of village Kandirpar of the upazila. Local people said the motorcycle hit him when he was going to mosque for Isha prayers at about 7:30pm.
   He was taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where he died at about 9:30pm.
   In Sirajganj, according to a UNB report, a boy was killed and 25 people were injured in separate road accidents Saturday morning.
   A bus ran over a boy, Injamul, 13, son of late Dulal, at Ramgati Moholla in the municipality area at about 10:30am.
   In another accident, 25 people were injured when a bus plunged into a roadside ditch at Chala under Ullapara upazila at about 10:00am.
   Thirteen of the injured were admitted to Ullapara Upazila Health Complex and Sirajganj General Hospital. Of them, condition of four was stated to be critical.
   Separate cases were filed with the respective police stations.


Fishermen abstained from catching
fry to get food aid

THE government has taken up a project in cooperation with Saudi Government for providing food assistance to the unemployed fishermen abstained from catching hilsa fry, known as ‘jhatka’ following the government ban.
   Government imposes ban every year on netting ‘jhatka’ for three months (from March to May) in 64 upazilas of 11 districts to boost hilsa production.
   Relief and Rehabilitation Department officials said the rice would be distributed among 1,45,335 fishermen families during this period. Each family will get 10 kg rice per month.
   The rice will be distributed in four upazilas of Chandpur, seven upazilas each of Bhola, Patuakhali and Pirojpur, three upazilas of Lakshmipur, 10 upazilas of Barisal, five upazilas each of Chittagong and Barguna, six upazilas each of Shariatpur and Munshiganj, four upazilas of Jhalakati.
   The rice distribution has already been started among the fishermen, the officials said.
   Local fishermen said the allocation of 10kg rice for each family for a month is quite insufficient for their livelihood.


Man robbed of Tk 3.65 lakh

ARMS muggers snatched Tk.3.65 lakh from a young man at Eadgong Bazar, a business centre, in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday
   Anis Ahmed, a student of Cox’s Bazar Government University Collage and inhabitant of village East Pookkhali under sadar upazila, was returning home with the money in a bag at about 3:30pm when the criminals, allegedly led by Kalim Ullha, ex-chairman of Islampour union council, robbed the money at gunpoint, eyewitnesses said.
   Later, a police team raided village Pahasihakhali to arrest the criminals but failed to trace them.
   A case was registered with the sadar police station.


Patuakhali Juba Dal
leader held

THE police in Patuakhali Friday evening arrested municipal commissioner Md Mostafizur Rahman alias Rumi, 42, also the municipal unit Juba Dal president, at the launch terminal in Patuakhali.
   The Patuakhali sadar police officer-in-charge, Md Sheikh Delwar Hossain, said Mostafizur Rahman was wanted by the police.
   Mostafizur went to the launch terminal along with his associates and beat Md Mamun, 35, a supervisor of Sundarban-5, a double-decker launch, the police said.
   Mostafizur claimed that Mamun had misbehaved with him. Mostafizur also beat other members on the launch staff at the time, the officer-in-charge said.
   At the news, Delwar sent a police tem to the terminal and the team arrested Mostafizur.
   Delwas said there were several general diaries filed against Mostafizur during 2001–2007, but investigations could not be carried out on political grounds.
   Sub-inspector Abul Hossain lodged a case against Mostafizur, who was produced in the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Patuakhali on Saturday. The court sent him to jail.


Physician held with Phensidyl
in Comilla

THE police arrested a physician in possession of Phensidyl syrup (codeine) in Comilla on Friday night.
   The arrested was AHM Zahidul Islam, 38, medical officer of Cordda Sub Health Centre in Gazipur.
   The police said a police team had arrested Zahidul Islam when he was moving suspiciously in the Badshamiar Bazar area in Comilla town at about 9:00pm. They also recovered six bottles of Indian Phensidyl from his possession.
   A case was filed with the sadar police station under the narcotics control act.
